ABOUT THE PODAST

Welcome to the Ladybugging STEM podcast! The title, “Ladybugging STEM”, is a play on the term “debugging”, which means fixing errors in code. The purpose of this podcast is to build up underrepresented female voices in science, technology, engineering, and math. The podcast has three aims: to support, inspire, and communicate.

AIM 1: SUPPORT

There are so many amazing women doing amazing things in STEM research --- they deserve to be celebrated!

AIM 2: INSPIRE

This podcast hopes to inspire young women interested in research to promote diversity in STEM. A female scientist once told me that if people do not see others who look like them in leadership roles, they’re going to think they cannot succeed there. This podcast aims to help remove this obstacle by participating in and celebrating the success of women in STEM.

AIM 3: COMMUNICATE

The third aim is to bridge the gap in scientific communication by improving its accessibility and understandability; scientific research is shaping the world, and communicating this impact to everyone is important to drive change.

ABOUT THE HOST

Hi! My name is Abigail, and I'm a first year biomedical engineering PhD student at Columbia University. I started this podcast as a senior biomedical engineering undergraduate at Vanderbilt University. I fell in love with research after my freshman year working in a radiochemistry lab, and since then have gone on to research a variety of topics including nanomedicine, microfluidics, and cancer biology.  My current work focuses on micro-/nanoscale systems for studying the cellular microenvironment.

One of my favorite parts of my research journey has been networking with biomedical professionals, hearing about their research, and learning from their experiences. I realized there are so many impressive people with a wealth of valuable advice for aspiring researchers like me, without a proper platform to share it. I decided to start this podcast to provide that platform so others can benefit from what these women have to say.
